PROVENANCE PWAVE

Red Blend
750 ML (Standard)
Napa Valley,
United States
$42.63
About This WineWineThe p-wave is the primary wave in an earthquake. We named this wine PWAVE because it shakes up the traditional blend of Bordeaux-heritage grape varietals, says Winemaker Chris Cooney. Weve added non-traditional varietals to a solid core of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing lively, bright red-plum and raspberry to the rich, black cherry and blackberry profile. A nice dose of new oak barrels adds spice, while the cool 2011 vintage gives complex herbal nuances. The tannin structure is firm, yet extremely supple, giving the wine notable elegance.VineyardBoth earthquakes and volcanoes have shaped Napa Valleys complex terroir, which includes more than 30 different soils types. We sourced the grapes from sites where each type of vine bears its best fruit. The Merlot was grown in heavier soils located in the cooler, southern part of the valley, while the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc come from well-draining, rocky soils in the mid-valley. Each of the other varietals was also selected from vineyards with the appropriate climate and soils.WinemakingAt Provenance, weve always produced varietal-designated Bordeaux-heritage wines handcrafted with traditional techniques. For our PWAVE, we made each wine individually to bring out its finest attributes and then, during repeated tastings (very enjoyable!), we assembled the most interesting and harmonious blend. Hand sorting and cold soaking of the berries, extended skin contact, gentle pressing, in-barrel malolactic fermentation and barrel aging all contributed to this wines complex, beautifully balanced flavors. VintageThe persistently cool 2011 vintage decreased yields in Napa Valley, but the remaining grapes ripened slowly, achieving delicious flavors. For the second consecutive year, Napa Valleys harvest was one of the latest on record. A wet winter and spring continued into mid-June, causing shatter during bloom and reducing the crop. While the steadily cool temperatures made us anxious and gave us gray hair, our P-Wave proveswith its depth of flavor and ripe, supple tanninsthat this temperamental vintage produced many exceptional wines.Wine ProfileVintage:2011Wine Type:Red WineVarietal:Red WineAppellation:Napa Valley
